As part of its commitment to fostering new work featuring diverse voices and perspectives, Inevitable Theatre Company is proud to announce a unique play development project tentatively entitled GATE, which will be devised by a select group of constituent playwrights from the St. Louis area and across the nation.
GATE will be a company-curated performance project - fictional, yet inspired by recent and current events in St. Louis and around the country, related to police violence and African-American youth, and filtered through the lens of Brechtian epic theatre and nonlinear, often contradictory theatrical narratives (see Brecht's poem "On Everyday Theatre").
Directly inspired by Ryunosuke Akutagawa's fiction and the 1950 Akira Kurosawa film Rashomon, a community's grief shatters into a million stories and a horrific crime is tried in the court of popular opinion.
We plan to develop this unique piece through a series of community workshops, leading to a staged reading in 2019 and a world premiere production in 2020.
If you are interested in participating in this development process (which will span from mid-2018 to 2020), as a constituent writer, an actor, or in any other capacity, please email firstname.lastname@example.org and include the word "GATE" in the Subject line.
